Montessori Philosophy

Montessori is an education philosophy and practice that fosters rigorous, self-motivated growth for children and adolescents in all areas of their development. It is a child-centered, developmentally based approach to education that views the child as someone eager for knowledge who will initiate learning in a supportive, stimulating, and thoughtfully prepared learning environment .Ā

Language Area

The Montessori language area includes oral language activities, pre-reading work, writing and reading comprehension. Initial sounds are introduced through Sandpaper Letters and Matching Objects. After the children learn a few sounds, they are then introduced to blending exercises through moveable alphabets.Ā

Math Area

Montessori math is a method of teaching math that uses visual and tactile materials to help children understand concepts like numeration, computation, fractions, and positive numbersĀ

Science Area

Montessori science is broken down into the categories of zoology, human biology, botany, earth science, physical science, as well as mechanics and technology.Ā

Sensorial Area

The sensorial area in Montessori classroom focuses on lessons and activities that help develop the five senses: seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling. The purpose of sensorial work is for the child to acquire clear, conscious information and to be able to make classifications in their environment

Social Studies

Social studies in a Montessori school, or the Childrenā€™s House, is broken down into three categories: geography, history, and culture. When children are first introduced to geography in a Montessori school, they are shown a picture of an animal, such as a tiger.Ā

Practical Life Area

Montessori practical life is a term that describes the activities that children do to develop skills for everyday life . Montessori practical life helps the child gain control of movement, hand-eye coordination, independence, concentration, and a sense of responsibilityĀ
